Humbug-Charles I & II (2004)

This first phase of this project was implemented on the private lands of Bill and Judy Mickelson north of Portola in 2004. The project consisted of pond and plug and culvert modification on 800 feet of Charles Creek and along 1500 feet of Humbug Creek. The project was primarily funded by the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) 319(h) funds for non-point source pollution (sediment and temperature) and the landowner. Total project budget was $156,000. The landowner also implemented grazing management changes with assistance from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).

(2006)

The second phase of this project was implemented in 2006, using remaining funds from the original SWRCB 319(h) grant to complete project development, environmental documentation, and permits. Construction funding was provided by the NRCS and landowner for $12,000. The second phase entailed treating another 600 feet of degraded channel on Charles Creek, upstream of the main access road to the ranch. Restoration included installing sod riffles to raise the existing channel, so streamflows can access the floodplain when bankful levels are reached. Downstream of the access road, another 700 feet of channel was filled with soil material left over from the Phase I project. Flows were diverted into an existing remnant channel system. On upper Humbug Creek, upstream of the 2004 work, 800 feet of incised channel was treated with flows diverted into the remnant channel system. The landowner completed the initial revegetation work on the first phase of the project and is responsible for project monitoring and maintenance in consultation with Feather River CRM staff.
